Scott Cleland is President of telecom research consulting firm Precursor LLC and Chairman of its partner site, NetCompetition.org, which provides broadband providers with research on net neutrality. Scott Cleland advises Fortune 500 companies and also publishes the widely read PrecursorBlog.com. On the firm’s subsidiary website, GoogleMonitor.com, Scott Cleland speaks out against the search engine’s business practices.
Scott Cleland founded Precursor LLC in 2006. He has testified for eight different Congressional subcommittees on competition issues. Institutional Investor magazine named Scott Cleland the top independent Telecom analyst twice in 2004 and 2005, and he has been featured in Fortune, Barrons, and the Wall Street Journal for his expertise.
As Chairman and CEO from 1999 to 2005, Scott Cleland helped build the Precursor Group. In 2002, Institutional Investor magazine ranked the independent research broker as the top independent communications research firm in 2004 and 2005 Thirty-nine of 50 of the country’s top investment institutions were his clients at the Precursor Group. In 2004, Institutional Investor referred to Scott Cleland as the "the de facto spokesperson for the independent research community" because of the dozens of national media outlets he interviewed with throughout the United States. Also in 2002, Scott Cleland co-founded the Investorside Research Association, the first and only association of independent research firms.
Scott Cleland, of McLean, Virginia, received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Kalamazoo College, earning the Distinguished Achievement Award later in life as an alumnus for his career achievements. Scott Cleland received his Master’s degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
